‘The Picnic Special’ Limited Edition helmet from Royal Enfield

Royal Enfield has been on a roll recently, a number of new motorcycle launches, its association with TCX, some great riding gear and now they are taking their helmet game a step forward. We got our hands on the new limited edition ‘The Picnic Special’ and here is what we thing about it. Only 120 of them will ever be made, we feel special already!

This has to be one of our favourite shell shapes we have come across recently. The aerodynamic teardrop shape with the small protruding spoiler gives it a sporty look. The visor mechanism is quite easy to operate and that makes life easier especially if you are the few who like to switch between the tinted and clear visor often.

The inner cushioning as well is quite good and results is a comfortable fit. It’s anti-microbial too. Being a D-Ring strap along with ISI and DOT certified, safety is well taken of. Ventilation is decent, although just like most helmets you do need to build up speed to get it functioning properly. The pin-lock on the visor is a great addition too and increases the functionality.

The inspiration behind the helmet is the 1920s, which was a decade of consolidation followed by expansion for Royal Enfield and recovering from the Great War with a minimalist two-model programme. The range evolved through the decade to include 350 and 500cc side-valve and overhead valve singles with advancements such as mechanical lubrication, electric lighting and saddle tanks.

The 8 HP 976cc V-twin Model 180 remained the mainstay throughout, providing owners with a brawny, unflappable motorcycle for work as well as, with an Enfield sidecar attached, outings with family and fellow enthusiasts. This helmet takes inspiration from the same – a group of Royal Enfield riders out on a summer afternoon riding together in the countryside.
