Yamaha is considering the development of a smaller capacity Tenere, mostly in the 300cc range. The Product Communications Manager for Yamaha, Fabrizio Corsi has hinted that the brand would develop a smaller Tenere if there is enough demand for it. Fabrizio Corsi revealed this during an interview with Motociclismo, an Italian motorcycle website.
This is one of the best bits of news we have heard this year, if not the best. A Yamaha Tenere 300 would just take things to the next level in the 300-400cc adventure motorcycle segment and this is one we’re already drooling over. The Yamaha Tenere 700 has become a legend of sorts in the adventure motorcycling scene.
It is an extremely capable and versatile motorcycle, looks great, can munch miles on the highways and can go anywhere. We in the Indian market too wished for it to be launched in India, but this was quite literally wishful thinking. Yamaha and all enthusiasts simply knew that it would be too expensive even if launched.
Now though, with talks of the Tenere 300, we are hopeful. Very hopeful. The Tenere 300 as a product makes so much sense not just in India but in the European and American markets too. For starters, it will be Yamaha’s perfect weapon against the likes of the KTM Adventure 390, BMW G 310 GS, Kawasaki Versys 300, etc.
Adding to this is the fact that Yamaha already has a versatile 300cc platform on sale across several international markets. The Yamaha YZF-R3 and MT-03 both share the same basic underpinnings while still offering vastly different riding characteristics.
This parallel-twin powered platform is very well capable of underpinning the new Yamaha Tenere 300, of course with lots of modifications to suit the adventure motorcycle. There are no other details available regarding this at the moment.
However, this hint dropped by Yamaha’s Product Manager shows that Yamaha certainly is looking in the right direction. There was just one condition imposed by Fabrizio Corsi — there should be great demand for it.
Going by the sales figures of motorcycles like the KTM Adventure 390, it is safe to say, there’s sufficient demand for it, especially since it involves the ‘Tenere’ badge. Hence, we’re almost certain that it will be produced. However, it might be a long time before we see any concrete development like a prototype or a test mule.
