The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 have been revealed. Yamaha Motorcycles recently revealed the 2021 MT-07 and MT-09 models. The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 boasts of a refreshed design while the MT-09 features several changes in terms of aesthetics as well as under the skin.
Both models feature changes to the engine in order to make it Euro 5 emissions norms compliant. The Yamaha MT-09 and MT-07 are motorcycles that are loved by enthusiasts. They combine simple, pleasurable riding with lots of features, a good amount of power and brilliant handling characteristics. Now, with just over a month to go before the Euro 5 emissions norms kick in, Yamaha has revealed the 2021 models.
2021 Yamaha MT-07
In terms of styling, the Yamaha MT-07 comes with a new front-end. It features a new compact LED headlamp unit with LED DRLs. The fuel tank has been redesigned and so have the radiator shrouds. It also gets new mirrors, LED indicators, and a new LCD instrument cluster. It remains almost the same at the rear end though.
The motorcycle retains its comfortable riding position, especially with the new handlebar which is wider by 15mm. The motorcycle is still powered by the much-loved parallel-twin engine. It is a liquid-cooled, 689cc parallel-twin engine that now produces a maximum power output of 73.4bhp at 8,750rpm and a peak torque output of 67Nm at 6,500rpm. This is 1.4bhp and 1Nm lower than the outgoing model. A 6-speed gearbox drives the rear wheel.
Yamaha has reworked the intake system, exhaust system and the ECU to help with Euro 5 compliance. The motorcycle also gets updated brakes, with new 298mm front discs replacing the old 282mm units. At 184kgs, the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 also weighs 2 kilograms more.
2021 Yamaha MT-09
The new Yamaha MT-09 comes with an updated design. Up front is a new headlamp with a single projector LED unit flanked by LED DRL strips on both sides. It also gets a redesigned fuel tank. The rear end has several changes too.
It uses a conventional mounting system for the registration number plate instead of the tyre-hugger mounted system used on the current model. The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 also gets a lighter swingarm and rear sub-frame. It uses a new Deltabox frame that is lighter and more rigid.
The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 is powered by a heavily reworked version of the old three cylinder engine. Displacement has increased from 847cc to 890cc thanks to a longer stroke. It features new forged pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft. Thanks to these changes, the engine produces 117bhp and 93Nm.
The Yamaha MT-09 features top-shelf electronics and riding aids like a 6-axis IMU, traction control, slide control, wheelie control, up and down quickshifter, cornering ABS, etc. It also gets three riding modes. A new 3.5-inch TFT display takes care of instrumentation duties.
Suspension duties are handled by a 41mm upside-down fork up front and an adjustable monoshock at the rear, both from Kayaba. Braking is handled by twin 298mm discs up front and a single 245mm disc at the rear. Both motorcycles will go on sale in international markets very soon.
At this moment, it is unclear if and when they will make their way to the Indian market. Competitors to the Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 are already present in India, now it remains to be seen if Yamaha decides to compete with its global competition even in India.
