Hero MotoCorp has signed 10 Harley-Davidson dealerships in order to continue providing customer support in 2021 and beyond. This comes shortly after Harley-Davidson had confirmed that the current dealer network would continue operating until 31 December 2020.
It was in September 2020 that Harley-Davidson announced its exit from the Indian market. The decision came as a part of the Rewire strategy that the American motorcycle manufacturer is implementing across all markets. According to this new strategy, the brand will concentrate only on key, profit-making markets and it turns out that India is not one among those markets.
Therefore Harley-Davidson decided to stop manufacturing in India. When the announcement was made, there were rumours that HD might seek a local partner to take over the sales and service. A month later, in October 2020, Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson announced their partnership.
Hero MotoCorp would take charge of the sales and service for Harley-Davidson motorcycles in India. This led to widespread outrage among current Harley-Davidson dealers across the country. These dealers would function only until 31 December, 2020. From January 2021 onwards, the new dealerships signed by Hero MotoCorp for Harley-Davidson would take charge of the famed American brand in India.
The names of these dealerships haven’t been announced yet. However, we do suspect that these 10 dealerships would be located in major metros and Tier-1 cities. This way, they would be evenly distributed across the country and will also be able to service a majority of the existing Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the country.
