Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Mugello
Jorge Lorenzo winner MotoGP Mugello

The MotoGP Mugello race will be remembered as one that started the real test for Marc Marquez. A test of his mental strength and his ability to regain confidence even when the championship is out of contention. The whole weekend was a disaster for him finally culminating in a crash on race day as well. In contrast Jorge Lorenzo was at the other end of the spectrum. Not once this entire weekend did it look like anybody else had a chance. Pure confidence and pure domination. In typical Lorenzo style, escaped at the front and left it a fight for second and third spot. Rossi has made it a habit of clawing back in on race day after having another terrible qualifying. The Moto Mugello race was not any different. After starting from the middle of third row, he lost a lot of time getting past Cal Crutchlow and spent most of his tyre putting in hot laps to catch up with the two Ducatis of Dovizioso and Iannone with Marquez fighting in between. By the time Rossi was close Marquez lost the front and low sided out. Dovi soon had mechanical trouble and retired. By now Iannone really upped the ante and Rossi never could get close enough for a pass. A lot of ifs and buts and crashes and mechanical failures this weekend. But it still was a fun race. Iannone had his best finish in MotoGP yet, Lorenzo made it three wins in a row and Rossi again finishes on the podium. For sure now the MotoGP championship is going to be a fight between Rossi and Lorenzo. A Yamaha year ahead.
