MotoGPs second free practice at Jerez was wet, then damp and then wet again, but Dani Pedrosa with a best lap 1.50.780 on rain tires, propelled him to the top of the timesheets with just ten minutes left in the session and was untouchable for the rest of the field. The surprise of the session was Valentino Rossi who in the wet is able to control the power delivery of his Ducati much better, was second. The Italian led the session for the better part the 45 minute session taking the lead first with a 1’52″565 then bettered his lap with a ’1’51″440, but he was 0.660s from Pedrosa.

Jorge Lorenzo who won last year’s Jerez GP in similar weather conditions was third and little more than one second adrift, but he didn’t like he was looking for lap times. Casey Stoner was fourth and it seemed he wasn’t satisfied with his rain tires. Nicky Hayden was fifth followed by Andrea Dovizioso and Alvaro Bautista. Stefan Bradl took the seventh spot, while Cal Crutchlow finished eighth and ahead of Yamaha factory rider Ben Spies who was 2.629 seconds from the top of the timesheets while Stefan Bradl closed out the top ten.

Randy de Puniet and Mattia Pasini who suffered a crash in the session finished in 11th and 12th respectively with both riders finishing ahead of Ducati GP12 prototype riders Karel Abraham and Hector Barbera. More rain is expected for tomorrow’s FP3 and qualifying.
