Honda has recently patented a new scooter to be sold in India. Leaked images plainly reveal the retro styling language. The scooter is already sold as the Honda Metropolitan in global markets. The Honda Metropolitan is sold in many variants across the world, and is generally powered by a 49cc engine. However, the Honda Metropolitan sold here in India will most likely be based on the Honda Activa engine.
There is further speculation that the Honda Metropolitan in India could be an electric scooter. The scooter would go head to head with the Hero Leap to be launched soon. The Leap will be powered by a petrol-electric hybrid motor with a rechargeable battery management system. The Leap was showcased in the 2012 Auto Expo, and a production ready prototype was revealed later at the 2014 Auto Expo.
A move into the electric scooter market with the Honda Metropolitan will give Honda an edge in India. Honda has already successfully experimented with launches like the Navi and the CBR650F. The possibility of being an electric scooter is another USP for the Honda Metropolitan which will likely be priced at a premium due to its retro styling. The Honda Metropolitan will rival the Yamaha Fascino, Suzuki Access and the pretty expensive Piaggio Vespa.
