The Honda Activa has broken a 17-year streak held by motorcycles in the Indian two-wheeler market as the best sellers. The fact that the Honda Activa has become the best-selling two-wheeler in the country comes after the Honda Activa was the best-selling two-wheeler in the country for six months on the trot. From January to June 2016, the Honda Activa sold a staggering 13,38,015 units when compared to 12,33,725 units sold in the same period in 2015. Also, the Activa has outsold it’s nearest motorcycle rival by 1.04 lakh units.
Senior Vice President – Sales and Marketing, HMSI had earlier outlined Honda’s plans to make scooters the most preferred two-wheelers in India with the Activa leading the charge. He had said, “In line with our strategy to surprise our customers by adding freshness to our products regularly, the 2016 Activa-i is Honda’s seventh new model of 2016. With this, we are confident of driving rapid scooterization of two-wheeler industry.”
Honda’s plans seem to have panned out as they expected, as the Honda Activa’s sales saw a rather sharp rise with a mind-boggling 1,97,295 units sold over last year’s total in just six months. The Honda Activa now has 15 per-cent market share in the Indian two-wheeler market, which is a huge slice for just one vehicle.
Commenting on the fabulous performance of the Honda Activa, Mr. Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, HMSI had said – “The superior convenience, unisex appeal coupled with product features converts millions from pillions to riders.”
The Activa was the first two-wheeler from Honda and has become a household name since it’s launch way back in 2001. The Activa saw sales of 55,000 units in its debut year in 2001. Last year alone, over 2.46 million units were sold which underlines just how far the Activa has come in terms of sales. In fact about half of all the scooters purchased in India are Activa’s. Honda has managed to sell more than ten million Activa scooters in the last fifteen years, which is an all-time record.
