The close finish in the WSBK first race at Misano where Jonathan Rea took a narrow win over Tom Sykes was indicative of how close both the Kawasaki Factory riders were in terms of pace and ability. Sykes looked to turn the tables in the second race and took the lead from Rea after turn 1, while the riders behind fought for position. Sykes and Rea soon broke away from the pack and checked out. Bad luck continued to dog Chaz Davies after the Ducati rider crashed on the third lap, with Van Der Mark also being caught up in the chaos. Both riders re-joined the race and Davies retired later while Van Der Mark recovered to take tenth.

At the front, Sykes held the lead for much of the race but fell prey to a decisive move from Rea with five laps to go and cleared off into the distance. Sykes could not respond and had to take second place about three seconds behind Rea. Giugliano made amends for his spill in the first race by taking third place for Ducati. Xavi Fores, Lorenzo Savadori and Nicky Hayden too made amends by picking up fourth, fifth and sixth after crashing in the first race.

Jonathan Rea’s efforts in securing a stunning double victory at Misano to edge far ahead of Tom Sykes in the WSBK championship with five rounds remaining has swung the championship massively in his favour. Sykes has to work some sensational magic in the coming races to get back in contention. Chaz Davies too moved even farther away from contention after a rather unproductive Misano round. At the this stage, Rea looks unstoppable.
